OWL Co-Founder Adam Haigler discusses the challenges and strategies for implementing Project Based Learning (PBL) in a virtual environment due to the COVID-19 crisis.
In 2020, educators faced unprecedented challenges due to the sudden shift in job expectations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading some to consider resignations or early retirements. One vital strategy to combat the resulting isolation and address teacher shortages is to cultivate connections among educators, providing a platform for them to share experiences and insights. Through initiatives like the Teacher-Powered Schools Ambassador program, educators have engaged in empowering decision-making processes, fostering innovative, student-centered practices. These programs have not only offered support during difficult times but also led to the creation of strong learning communities. Discussions among educators have explored pressing issues such as anti-racism in schools, student concerns, and effective engagement strategies in virtual settings. By prioritizing student-centered approaches and community involvement, educators aim to navigate the unique challenges of teaching in the current landscape. Building meaningful connections, even in virtual environments, has proven invaluable in transcending limitations and fostering a sense of community and resilience among educators.
