Teachers inspired by work with OWL helped create a remarkable, equity-focused mural.
The “Just a Piece of Freedom” mural in Old Saybrook brought together the community with vibrant, multicultural artistry. International muralist Rafael Blanco created the 17- by 74-foot mural, featuring portraits of local students, celebrating their diverse backgrounds and talents. High school student Nick Chacha spearheaded the project, with a message of unity and acceptance, fostering a deeper connection among the town's residents.
Two teachers who oversaw the projects had participated in a year of work with Open Way Learning in Old Saybrook and were inspired to have their students do meaningful public art in their community.
